Independent reading: characters

Characters

In the book by the main character Nicky is a Lonely 12 year old girl. After her mother and baby sister die Nicky and her father move to a remote cabin in the woods. Her father is now short spoken and doesn't bring any memories up from their past lives. Nicky mostly keeps to her self and doesn't bother her grieving father.  Living in the middle of the woods leaves Nicky antisocial and not have many friends. The grief inside of her has built up and she feels there is no where for her to vent. With a father unable to function with his grief, and no mother, Nicky feels trapped in her web of feelings.

When Nicky and her father come across a new born infant laying nearly dead in the snow her personality is changed tremendously. Her voice becomes heard and she fights for the baby's rights and well being.  Her and her father start to talk more about the loss of her mother and sister. The new baby sends small reminders of the deceased family of Nicky and her father.

The change in Nicky's personally advances the plot because Nicky is the main reason the baby wasn't given to a foster home or even the birth parents who abandoned her. Without her personally change her voice would have never been heard and the plot would not proceed onto its next destination. Nicky's new personality may be the reason for new conflict in the book and moves along the story so the theme can be recognized.
